Friday Help Sessions at Minico Come to an End
Posted: March 04, 2009
To the Parents and Patrons of Minico High School:
On September 20th, 2006, Minico began Friday Help sessions. Two Fridays a month, we released school at 1 PM. All students with a D or an F in any class were assigned to help sessions with their teacher. Two sessions were scheduled on theses days. Students not failing a class were released to go home. Students wanting extra help could stay as long as they had the permission of the teacher.
We did see a 10% decrease in the numbers of students required to attend each week. Most of the faculty felt the first year was successful. We also had positive reports from parents and students about the help sessions. The administration and faculty have continued to monitor the numbers and the program, adjusting the program when necessary.
Now we must make another adjustment. The numbers attending Friday Help have gone down. I wish I could say this is due to students being more successful in the classroom, but the truth is more students are opting out of Friday Help to enjoy a half day off. This was never the intent of the program. Friday Help’s mission was to target those students failing classes and give them another resource. Too many Fridays the phone rings excessively with parents excusing their student from Friday Help. Absenteeism is up on Fridays and it is directly correlated to Friday Help. As a faculty we decided to discontinue Friday Help this school year.
This does not mean there is no extra help for your student. Teachers may be contacted via the telephone or email. Math Lab is Monday through Thursday after school. A computer lab is available every morning before school begins. Help is still available for all students. Thank you for continued support.
Sincerely,
Dan Rogers, Principal
