Please help me in congratulating our six Minico students who attended the Hispanic Youth symposium this weekend in Sun Valley. This was an amazing and wonderful experience for 300 students from around Idaho. The symposium grew out of a 1988 brainstorming session centered on ways to curb the alarming 60+ percent dropout rate for Latino teens in Idaho. Over the years, the dropout rate has significantly improved, but it remains the highest of any ethnic group in the state.
Mt. Harrison students selected to attend the 2012 Hispanic Youth Symposium were seniors: Marcos Vega, Mark Munoz, Ileana Aguilar and Gabriela Ruiz Gonzalez. The group came away inspired by the "Si Se Puede" spirit and motivated to finish out the year and roll on into college. Although the competition for scholarships was fierce, Gabriela Ruiz Gonzalez prevailed and came back with a $1000 scholarship to the Austin Kade Academy of Esthetics-a true honor since the Academy wasn't even planning on giving out any scholarships, with it being its first year attending HYS's college fair.
A few notable activities with the Gear Up Grant include 67 7th graders receiving computers of their own, and planting trees celebrating Arbor Day. All 7th graders in the school district had an opportunity top fill out an application and complete an essay on the topic of how they would use a computer to further their educational pursuits. The Gear Up Grant (program) budgeted for up to 100 students to receive a computer, but 67 took the opportunity to complete the required paperwork. Monday, April 23rd is when the computers came in, and there were several huge smiles from students and parents alike! Gear Up will do the "Computers for Kids" program next school year, as the current 6th graders will be added to the cohort...
